This painting was part of a past exhibit at ArtsWest with the title The American Dream An Indelicate Balance.
Should we feel elated for this man for living his life with so little or shame that we need so much?
As in the paintings of the saints in Medieval times where there’s a hermit in the background living in a cave, this painting calls attention to the existence of people who, alienated, live on the borders of society, only in this painting, he is in the foreground and is hermit and saint embodied in one person.
Such is our society, a dichotomy of wants and needs, freedom and restrictions, powerful and helpless.
Has the subject in the painting achieved an indelicate balance?
